CSIR NET 2026 Educational Qualification

Candidates applying for CSIR NET 2026 must possess a Master's degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised university or institution. General and EWS candidates should secure at least 55% marks, while candidates belonging to OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD, and Third Gender categories require a minimum of 50% marks.

Eligible qualifications include:

  • M.Sc.
  • Integrated BS-MS
  • Four-Year Bachelor's Degree Programme
  • BE/B.Tech
  • B.Pharma
  • MBBS
  • Equivalent degrees recognized by UGC and CSIR

The minimum percentage requirement for PG must be fulfilled without rounding off.

Can Final-Year Students Apply for CSIR NET 2026?

Yes. Candidates pursuing the final year or semester of their Master's degree or equivalent exam are eligible to apply for CSIR NET 2026 provisionally.

However, they must complete the qualifying degree with the prescribed percentage:

  • Within two years from the declaration of the CSIR NET result for JRF and Assistant Professor eligibility.
  • Within one year for candidates qualifying under the "Admission to PhD Only" category.

Failure to fulfill these CSIR NET 2026 eligibility conditions will result in cancellation of candidature.

CSIR NET 2026 Eligibility for Four-Year Bachelor's Degree

As per the latest UGC regulations, candidates who have completed a four-year/eight-semester bachelor's degree programme are also eligible to appear for CSIR NET 2026.

Candidates qualifying CSIR NET 2026 through the four-year bachelor's degree are eligible for:

  • Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)
  • Admission to PhD programmes

However, such candidates are not eligible for Assistant Professor positions through this route. Candidates currently studying in the final year of a four-year bachelor's programme may also apply for CSIR NET 2026.

 

CSIR NET 2026 Age Limit

The age limit for CSIR NET 2026 depends upon the category of eligibility.

Age Limit for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)

Candidates applying for JRF in CSIR NET 2026 should not be more than 30 years of age as on 1 July 2026.

Category-wise Age Relaxation

A relaxation of up to 5 years is available for:

  • OBC-NCL candidates
  • SC candidates
  • ST candidates
  • PwD/PwBD candidates
  • Third Gender candidates
  • Women applicants

Age Relaxation for Research Experience

Candidates possessing research experience in the relevant subject after post-graduation are eligible for age relaxation equal to the duration of research, subject to a maximum of five years.

The research must be certified by:

  • Recognised Indian Universities
  • Institutes of National Importance
  • Foreign Universities recognised in their respective countries
  • Government of India Public Sector Undertakings

Research undertaken for obtaining graduation or post-graduation degrees will not be considered.

Age Relaxation for Armed Forces Personnel

Candidates who have served in the Armed Forces are eligible for CSIR NET 2026 age relaxation corresponding to the duration of service, subject to a maximum of five years. Under any circumstances, the total age relaxation cannot exceed five years.

CSIR NET 2026 Age Limit for Assistant Professor

There is no upper age limit for candidates applying for Assistant Professor eligibility through CSIR NET 2026.

CSIR NET 2026 Age Limit for PhD Admission

Candidates seeking admission to PhD programmes through CSIR NET 2026 are not subject to any upper age restriction.

CSIR NET Eligibility for PhD Degree Holders

Candidates holding a PhD degree whose Master's exam was completed on or before 19 September 1991 are eligible for a relaxation of 5% marks, reducing the minimum requirement from 55% to 50%.

CSIR NET Eligibility for Third Gender Candidates

Candidates belonging to the Third Gender category are entitled to the same relaxation in age, fee, and CSIR NET 2026 eligibility criteria as those available to SC, ST, and PwD/PwBD candidates. The subject-wise cut-off for this category is the lowest among the respective reserved categories.

Foreign Qualification Eligibility for CSIR NET 2026

Candidates possessing foreign qualifications are advised to obtain equivalence certificates from the University Grants Commission (UGC) before applying for CSIR NET 2026. Similarly, candidates holding postgraduate diplomas awarded by Indian Institutes should verify their equivalence with Master's degrees through the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
