Kerala Teacher’s Eligibility Test

KTET or Kerala Pareeksha Bhavan is an exam constituted by the Kerala Pareeksha Bhavan to equip the teachers with the best of quality in teaching as well as to combat various kinds of challenges in schools. The Exam came into effect with the Right to Education Act of 2009 to ensure quality education at the state.

The KTET Results for the exams conducted on the 30th and 31st of May 2023 were released recently and we congratulate all candidates who came with a bang of success! Further, candidates who couldn’t clear this time need not worry as Kerala Pareeksha Bhavan is planning to conduct the next exam by December 2023. So, gear up for the next slot of exams and keep in mind to never miss this second chance as a number of government jobs are going to line up in the forward year of 2024.

KTET Qualification & Categories

KTET exams are been conducted in four main categories viz., category 1 or K1, category 2 or K2, category 3 or K3, and category 4 or K4. And the qualification pertaining to each category are briefed below.

  • Category 1 or K1: - This category is specifically for the Lower Primary level and requisite qualification includes,

45% in Higher Secondary/ Senior Higher Secondary Qualification and a pass in TTC/ D.Ed./ D.El.Ed. Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education)/2-year Diploma in Elementary Education approved by NCTE (2002)

OR

50% in Higher Secondary/ Senior Higher Secondary Qualification and 4-year B.El.Ed. Ed (Bachelor of Elementary Education)/ 2-year D.Ed. (Special Education)

  • Category 2 or K2: - K2 is designated for Upper primary level School Teachers with qualifications as detailed below,

45% in BA/ B. Com/ B.Sc. and a pass in B.Ed. /D.El.Ed. (Diploma in Elementary Education) mandated by NCTE.

OR

50% in Higher Secondary/ Senior Higher Secondary Qualification and 4-year B.El.Ed. Ed (Bachelor of Elementary Education)/ 4-year B.A.Ed. or B.Sc. Ed (D.Ed. / D.El.Ed. / B.Ed. final year students are also eligible to apply)

OR

B. Tech qualification and 2-year Diploma/ TTC/ D.Ed./ D.El.Ed. mandated by NCTE.

  • Category 3 or K3: - This category is for High School level teachers and the required qualifications include, 45% in BA/ B. Com/ B.Sc. and B.Ed. in that corresponding subject (From Universities of Kerala or Universities approved by the Government of Kerala)

OR

M.Sc. qualification and B.Ed. degree admission obtained on the basis of M.Sc. marks.

OR

50% marks in M.Sc. (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology) with M.Sc. Ed degree approved by NCERT/ 50% marks in M.Sc. (Zoology, Botany) with M.Sc. Ed. degree in Life Sciences from RIE (Regional Institute of Education).

OR

45% in BA or equivalent with a qualification in LTTC/ D. El. Ed.

  • Category 4 or K4: - This category is specifically designed for specialist teachers who have expertise in sports, Arts & Crafts, and languages. The requisite qualification includes Teachers eligible in Arabic, Hindi, Sanskrit, and Urdu (UP level), Specialist teachers, Sports teachers (High school level), and Art & Craft teachers (approved by NCTE)

How to qualify for KTET?

KTET exam patterns for various categories differ according to the subject of specialization chosen for writing the exam.

The KTET (Kerala Teacher Eligibility Test) is divided into four categories, each with specific paper outlays and marking schemes. In Category 1, the paper comprises Child Development and Pedagogy (30 marks), Mathematics (30 marks), Environmental Science (30 marks), and first and second language sections (30 marks each). Correct responses are awarded 1 mark, with no negative marking for incorrect answers.

For Category 2, the paper includes Child Development and Pedagogy (30 marks), along with Mathematics and Science combined (60 marks), and first and second language sections (30 marks each). Similarly, correct responses are rewarded with 1 mark, and there is no deduction for wrong answers.

Category 3's paper covers Adolescent Psychology, Theories of Learning, and Teaching Aptitude (40 marks), with paper II focusing on first language subjects (30 marks), and paper III consisting of subject-specific questions (80 marks). Like the previous categories, correct answers receive 1 mark, and there is no negative marking.

In Category 4, the paper comprises Child Development and Pedagogy (30 marks), paper-II includes first language subjects (40 marks), and paper-III entails subject-specific content (80 marks). As with the other categories, 1 mark is awarded for each correct answer, and there is no penalty for incorrect responses.
