What are the eligibility criteria for the exam?
The candidates appearing for the PSC Junior Instructor exam should hold any of the following qualifications or its equivalent.
As per the official PSC Notification SSLC or equivalent qualification is compulsory. Added to the basic qualification any of the following qualifications or its equivalent are required.
- National Trade Certificate in Instrument Mechanic
Or
- National Apprenticeship Certificate in Instrument Mechanic
Or
- Diploma in the appropriate branch of engineering from a government or government recognized polytechnic or its equivalent qualification.

Experience Required for Junior Instructor
Junior Instructor in Industrial Training department is a responsible post. Candidates must be skilled and able to prove their experience according to their qualification as when and where required by Kerala PSC.
Junior Instructor Instrument Mechanic Syllabus
Since the Junior Instructor in Instrument mechanic is technical training post, candidate should be able to answer the questions related to various topics of Instrument Mechanic training. The exam will be based on a predefined syllabus published by Kerala PSC. Junior Instructor Instrument Mechanic Syllabus
Module 1 (10 Marks)
- Precision Measuring Instruments, Gauge blocks, Sine bar, Dial indicators, Vernier Calipers, Micrometers, Bevel protractor, Thickness gauges. Element & types of screw threads used in instruments, Calculation of drill size for tapping.
- Types of tubes used for instrumentation. Tube cutter, Flaring tools, Swedging tools, equipment’s & fixture required for pipe bending, straightening, thread cutting etc.
- Electrical components conductor, semiconductor & insulators. Standard wire gauge (SWG). Introduction of electricity static electricity. Current, voltage, P.D, E.M.F, resistance. Electrical circuit D.C & A.C circuit differences. Importance of grounding.
- Uses of mustimeter. Resistor, Resistivity and colour code, Types of resistors used in instrumentation.
- Types of soldering irons. Solder & flux. Ohm's law & Kirchhoff’s laws. Series & parallel circuits. Primary & secondary cells and batteries. (Liquid & dry).
- Switches and types. Magnet and magnetism, magnetic properties. Explanation of Electromagnetism, application types E.M. Relays.
Module 2 (10 Marks)
- Principles of alternating current, A.C & DC electricity, types of wave forms, time period and frequency, peak to peak values, RMS values, Average values.
- Inductor and Inductance, types of inductors, Factors affecting the value of inductance, self-inductance (L), Capacitance, types of capacitor, unit of capacitance, energy stored in capacitors. Capacitors in series and parallel. Capacitors in DC circuit.
- A.C. impedance, Inductive reactance, capacitive reactance AC current through R, L, C circuits. Resonance in RLC circuit. Importance of series and parallel resonance.
- Introduction of AC and DC generators working principles, EMF equation. Faraday's Law, Lenz's Law, Fleming's left Hand and righthand rules. DC motors working principles, Different speed controlling techniques of DC motors. AC motors, induction motors, three phase motors, stepper motors.
Junior Instructor Instrument Mechanic Exam Pattern
Junior Instructor Instrument Mechanic exam will be conducted either online or offline. In case of offline exam, candidates will be provided with a printed question booklet and OMR answer marking sheet. There will 100 questions each right answer carries 1 mark and wrong answer deducts 0.33 marks. Candidates shall skip doubtful questions in order to avoid negative marks. PSC will decide the cut off marks for the exam after evaluating the answer sheet.
Important Documents and Guidelines
PSC OMR / Online exam is the first step of filtering in the Junior Instructor Instrument Mechanic. While appearing for the exam in December 2024, candidates must hold the printed copy of the PSC Admission Ticket, original ID Card and pen. Electronic devices such as mobile phones, smart watches, ear phones and other devices are not allowed inside the exam hall. Candidate must ensure that all such devices are kept in the cloak room or outside the exam hall.
Once the examination is successfully completed PSC will publish the list of candidates who have acquired minimum marks or PSC cut-off marks. Those elected candidates must appear for interview, as and when instructed by Kerala PSC. Attending PSC interview is compulsory, as the interview has 10 marks which is a deciding factor in the final PSC Junior instructor rank list 2024. During the interview session the interview board will cross check the certificates and copy of certificates demanded by the PSC for the post of Junior Instructor Instrument Mechanic.

How to Apply for PSC Exams?
Candidates can apply for Kerala PSC exams through online. In order to apply you need to create a registered candidate profile. After setting up the candidate profile, applicants must provide the full details of their experience and educational qualifications in relevant pages in the website Thulasi PSC. After creating the profile candidates need to wait for the relevant notifications. Once the notification is released you can find it in the respective page inside the notification tab in the Home Page. While inside the exam application link, PSC will automatically show if you are eligible to apply for the exam. If you possess any equivalent qualification, you shall apply with that provision. The equivalent certificate and the equivalency certificates should be submitted during the time document verification. All candidates must be mindful about applying the exam and submitting PSC confirmations on or before the respective last dates.
