What is EWS?

EWS is a reservation system was approved by Government of India on 7^th January, 2019. The EWS reservation came into force to benefit the low-income candidates of general category. The Government was mindful about the fact that millions of people outside the traditional reservation system. The EWS reservation was made lawful to enable these population for a fair competition. The candidates who are eligible for EWS certificate by the government are eligible for 10% reservation benefit in Exams conducted by both Kerala Government and Central Government. This 10% reservation is deducted from the 50% representation of Open Competition category.

Candidates applying for district-wise exams conducted by Kerala PSC should study the rotation chart of PSC available in PSC’s official site.

EWS certificate can be used to avail the 10% reservation for the Economically Weaker Section in government jobs of both state and central all over the India. EWS or Economically Weaker Section is identified as a population whose family income is less than ₹ 8 Lakh. Also, they should not belong to the categories such as SC, ST or OBC.

Eligibility for EWS

With introduction of EWS reservation the criteria to identify EWS candidates were also defined. EWS criteria for Central Government jobs are as follows:

• EWS Candidate's annual family income must be less than Rs. 8 lakhs per annum.
• Their family must not own more than 5 acres of agriculture land.
• The residential flat area should be below 1000 sq ft.
• The residential plot's area should be below 100 square yards if in a notified municipality sector.
• The residential plot's area should be below 200 square yards if in a non-notified municipality sector.

EWS Criteria for Kerala PSC

After in depth analysis of Central Government’s EWS reservation Kerala government has added its own observations to the identification criteria. Under Kerala Government, eligibility criteria for EWS are as listed below.

• Annual family income not more than Rs. 4 lakhs per annum.
• Land area not more than 2.5 acres panchayat area.

Or

• Land area not more than 75 cents of land in municipal area.

Or

• Land area not more than 50 cents in municipal corporation area.
• House plots area not more than 20 cents in a municipality area

Or

• House plots area not more than 15 cents in municipal corporation area.

How to apply for EWS Certificate?

While applying for an exam in PSC’s official site EWS eligible candidates should choose “yes” for EWS eligibility quer.

Candidates need to present the EWS certificate officiated by Tahsildar or Village Officer during document verification.

In order to obtain the EWS certificate candidates need to fill the respect form available at Akshaya Centre.

If the candidates fail to present EWS certificate at the time of document verification they won’t be ousted from rank list. Instead, they will be declared ineligible to compete in EWS quota but they will be able to compete under open competition category.

PSC Rotation Chart.

Kerala PSC ensures the implementation of reservation through a special system called Rotation Chart. After the implementation of EWS reservation on 23 October, 2020. EWS candidates have the following turns in main list 9, 19, 29, 39, 49, 59, 69, 79, 89, & 99.
